Master of Science in Mountain Environment and Development Studies

The Master of Science in Mountain Environment and Development Studies at the School of Forestry and Natural Resource Management at the Institute of Forestry (IOF) is a multidisciplinary, research-oriented program designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary to address the unique environmental and developmental challenges of mountain regions. Spanning two years across four semesters, the curriculum integrates theory, research methodologies, and applied knowledge in mountain economy, range management, and disaster risk reduction. The final semester is fully dedicated to conducting independent research and presenting findings. Eligible applicants must hold a four-year undergraduate degree in Forestry, Agriculture, Engineering, or Science from Tribhuvan University or a recognized institution, and admission is based on a competitive entrance exam and academic merit. Students are evaluated through a rigorous internal and external assessment system, with a minimum of 50% required in each component. Attendance is a key part of the academic commitment, with at least 80% required to qualify for final exams. The program culminates in a thesis evaluated by a Research Assessment Committee of internal and external experts. Graduates of this program are prepared to contribute meaningfully to sustainable mountain development, natural resource management, and resilience planning in both national and international contexts.
